Driver Rehabilitation Services (DRS) is dedicated to helping drivers who have to overcome cognitive disabilities following brain injury or other changes. Cognition includes perception, attention, concentration, memory, and other forms of thinking. Driving safely requires sophisticated cognitive skills that (unlike physical or motor deficits) are often hidden to the casual observer. If you are recovering from a brain injury or are experiencing mental changes and are concerned about your ability to drive safely, we recommend and offer a comprehensive off-the-road evaluation of the cognitive skills required for driving. You will learn how your abilities compare to other drivers’. These skills include:

  • Judgment
  • Executive and action planning
  • The ability to react quickly
  • Make rapid decisions
  • Adjust to changing circumstances
  • Control impulses
  • Respond consistently
  • Deal with more than one thing at a time
  • Endurance
  • Eye-hand coordination and tracking.

Medical information and clearance is necessary before we begin the evaluation. Ask your doctor for a prescription (with your diagnosis) for a Clinical Driver Evaluation. If you have been referred by NYS DMV Medical Review, we will need a copy of your referral letter and the MV80U.1 form submitted by your doctor to the DMV.

For Medical Professionals: Medical Referrals for Clinical Driver Evaluations

This Clinical Driver Evaluation includes an assessment with carefully selected tests including the Elemental Driving Simulator, together with a thorough analysis of your medical and driving history, needs, and expectations. As part of the consultation, you and your observer (another person of your choosing – usually a family member) will have ample opportunity to discuss your driving and questions with the doctor. When all the information is in and the testing is completed, Dr. Gianutsos will help you and your family make a rational decision about driving.

You will receive a written report summarizing the findings and recommendations. This report is for your referring doctor and your personal use. It will not be sent to any other party – including the Department of Motor Vehicles – unless you specifically request.

If needed, you may be referred for an on-road driving evaluation and lessons with an appropriate specialist.

Dr. Gianutsos charges a flat fee of $400. which is not covered by Medicare or most other insurances.
